Monroe County Firefighter Safety Training

Had a great time yesterday (2/18) training firefighters in Monroe County, MI firefighter safety training. With help from my training partners Moe Collins and Mike Benadum, we taught firefighters the importance of recognizing dangerous fire conditions such as flashover's and backdraft's by reading smoke conditions through better size-up. We talked about the dangers of today's modern building construction and how different today's modern fire behavior has drastically changed. Moe taught the class on calling a Mayday and a new proactive approach to RIT team operations called the Safety Engine concept. As you can see in the pictures we demonstrated a few self survival techniques, the head first ladder bail, the window hang and a modified version of the Denver drill using a roofer (rescue ladder) to remove a downed firefighter out a first floor window. The class went very well and was a great opportunity to see some old firefighter friends from some of the Monroe County fire departments. I would like to say thank you to Chief Larry Merkle of the Monroe Township FD for inviting us up and hosting this great day of training.
